This is one of the original Graham Farish models which, along with some of the others, awaits replacement. In the meantime, Bachmann continue to keep meeting demand by continuing to use the old tooling and have so far produced five versions - two of them this year. This one is 44422 in BR plain black with late decals on the tender and should be in the shops by late July.
The 4F was designed for the Midland Railway by Fowler in 1911 and, later more, were produced for the LMS. Besides building for their own use, the LMS also built five for use on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. Midland 0-6-0s were part of a long tradition which can be traced back to Kirtley in 1850 and continued through to the Second World War. Over this time, vast numbers of 0-6-0s were built and each locomotive superintendent sought to improve those of his predecessor. A total of 772 of the 4F were built to Fowler's design, the last in 1941. The original 44422 was built at Derby in 1927.
