The Hornby model of a rebuilt LMS 'Patriot' was new last year and three versions were announced. Two more have joined the catalogue this year and this is the first of them. It is in BR green livery with earlier insignia on the tender but no warning flashes. All five announced so far have been in BR Brunswick green, with either early or late insignia. Hopefully we will see an LMS version next year.
The model has a 5-pole skew wound motor in the loco and both DCC ready and 'DCC fitted' versions of each general release loco are supplied to shops. The model has nicely detailed cab and tender front and a sliding hatch in the cab roof. Separately supplied are the loco and tender brake rods, brake hoses, cylinder drain-cocks, front steps, front coupling and an imitation screw-link coupling.
The original locomotives were built for express passenger duties in 1930, supposedly by converting some LNWR 'Claughtons'. However, this was not so. Although some parts from scrapped 'Claughtons' may have been used, effectively the 'Patriots' were 'new-build' locos produced as replacements. The story of their being 'rebuilds' was used to allow the funding to come from the revenue budget and not show as capital expenditure. Between 1946 and 1948, some of the class were rebuilt by Stanier with tapered boilers and double chimneys and this is a model of one of them converted in November 1948.
