The 9F was a surprise announcement at the 2006 London Toyfair and the challenge was to incorporate a motor and drive in the loco without obscuring the characteristic clear space beneath the boiler, which was such an obvious feature of the class. The solution was to place the motor in the firebox and run the drive through the boiler and down a gear tower concealed behind the valve gear. The result is very pleasing and the model has been selling well. Three new models are planned for this year and these will bring the total so far produced by Bachmann to 11 in three years. Our model, which should be in the shops by late July, is numbered 92077 and is in BR black with late insignia on the tender sides.

The 9F was the ultimate in BR steam locomotive development and proved to be a very versatile engine. Design work started at Brighton and Derby in 1951 and a total of 251 were built at Crewe and Swindon. Production ended in 1960 and 9F Evening Star was the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. Nine of the class have been preserved.
