A former Lima model, the Class 73 electro-diesel has come a long way under Hornby ownership. The latest development has been the removal of the large, ugly, couplings and their replacement by small ones to the same profile as the NEM replaceable type but, in this case, they are moulded onto the bogie frame. The improved appearance is immediately noticeable and was important to do as this model has always been seen a a relatively good representation of the class.
The model is the seventh to be released by Hornby, with a further two planned this year. It is in early Network SouthEast livery and represents 73129 City of Winchester. It is good to see this earlier version of the NSE livery being used, as Hornby has tended to use the revised version in the past.
