The current streamlined (Spamcan) West Country Class model first made its appearance in
the Hornby catalogue in 2001, although it was not the first time the company had made a
model of the class. Back in 1961 Rovex Scale Models Ltd produced the Tri-ang model of
BB/WC Class Winston Churchill in BR livery and various other versions appeared on
the model until it was finally dropped in 1998. As all Southern fans will know, two sets
of names were used for the class. The first 48 members were named after West Country
locations and the remainder of the class celebrated the Battle of Britain. During its
life, the 1961 model took 9 different Battle of Britain names but only twice was it given
a West Country name. With the 2001 model there has been much better balance. To date we
have had 12 named after Battle of Britain subjects and 9 after West Country subjects.
It would seem that the Southern Region were either quick in applying the new BR numbers to their locomotives in 1948 or were slow in repainting them in BR Brunswick green. So far Hornby have released six of their models of this class in SR Malachite livery but carrying BR numbers and/or insignia - and here are two more.
34031 Torrington (R2691) has no insignia on the tender but its BR number is in BR style font. 34006 Bude (R2685) has its BR number on the cabsides but they are in Southern Railway 'Sunshine' font. Furthermore, the loco does not have its own tender but has been paired with an ex-LMS Stanier tender in black with 'BRITISH RAILWAYS' on its sides. This represents the locomotive after it was sent to the London Midland Region during the Loco Trials of 1948, where it performed very well. The model has been released this year as a limited edition of 2008 pieces to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the locomotive trials.
