Hornby first released the brand new super-detail LSWR Class M7 tank engine model in 2006 and has now produced nine versions of it with one more expected this year. They had previously produced a model of the M7 Class back in 1967 but this was a much simpler model and was last made in 1988. The current model comes in both short frame and long frame versions, with and without push-pull gear. There are other subtle differences included for the sake of authenticity. Seeing the 1967 model alongside the current one, shows just how far Hornby have travelled in the development of quality.
Two versions are reviewed here. The first of these is '676' (R2733) in
Southern Railway Malachite green livery
introduced by Bulleid in 1938. This is a model of a short frame loco built in 1897 and
withdrawn in 1961 after 64 years service. The second model is of a long frame example and
is in early BR lined black and numbered '30056' (R2734). The actual loco was built in 1906
and was scrapped in 1963. Both models show a plated bunker top.
