As with the Maunsell bogie passenger coaches, the 4-wheel Van C passenger brake is also back in the shops with its second batch of numbers. In Maunsell SR livery we have '437' (R4301C) and '441' (R4301D), while in BR Southern Region coach green we have 'S774S' (R4306C) and 'S793S' (R4306D).

Maunsell built 255 new brake vans for the Southern Railway in 1934 and these were based broadly on a design they has developed for the Dover-Dunkirk ferry service. The vans had a guard's compartment in the centre and storage areas at either end. The guard's compartments were fitted with stoves and some had a safe built in. They were used on milk and parcels trains but also appeared with passenger carrying stock. Following Nationalisation of the railways in 1948, the Southern Railway Van C became re-coded as a 'BY'.
