Hornby Skaledale Pill Box R8787Pill Box.JPG (14204 bytes)

This is really an 'out of the usual' item and represents concrete bunkers built all over Britain during the Second World War to guard the coast and major roads in the event of invasion. Whilst after the war, local authorities were paid grants by the government to meet the cost of removing them, the money was often spent on more urgent matters. As a result, many 'pillboxes', as they were affectionately called because of their shape, remain to this day. Some that were built on cliff tops are now to be found on the beach below as a result of cliff erosion.
