Dapol 5-Plank Wagons
The February 2008 releases by 1E Promotionals are both 5-plank wagons. The first is in the red-brown livery of The Leighton Buzzard Sand Co. (BE7), fitted with a moulded plastic sand load and numbered '2' in the fleet. The second is in the dark grey livery of A. Sharpe (BY9), coal merchants in Bletchley. This has no running number but has a black plastic coal load.
Leighton Buzzard was a source of sand when London's West End was being developed and in the First World War it was used in the production of armaments. The Leighton Buzzard Sand Co. was in business as early as 1897, which was the year an agreement was signed with the LNWR for the provision of sidings for the wagons. The railway that once served the sand pits is the site of the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway.
