Hornby Stanier 2-6-4T
The Stanier 2-6-2 tank was one of the surprises that Hornby announced last year. Like
many of their new models it was a well kept secret. Three versions were planned for last
year but it was late in the programme and these models slipped into 2008. We have already
described in some detail the first of the three to be released, that in LMS livery. The
remaining two are now in the shops and these are R2636 in early BR lined black livery and
R2637, the same but with the later decals of the late 1950s. The latter is also in
'weathered' condition. All three models are available either for analogue control (DC) or
with a decoder socket fitted ready for a DCC decoder. The latter have an 'X' suffix to the
catalogue number.
Based on Fowler's 2-6-4 tanks, already modelled by Hornby, 206 of these large two cylinder tank engines were built between 1935 and 1943 with the typical Stanier tapering boiler, a feature he brought with him from the Great Western Railway. Manufacture was split between Derby and the North British locomotive works. There were several other differences in appearance and improvements incorporated including outside steam pipes and better visibility for the driver. They were used mainly for suburban passenger trains on the LMS and later in the London Midland Region. Sadly, none was preserved.
