Hornby set a new record in 2007 by releasing no fewer than nine
versions of a brand new locomotive in one year. In reality, four of the models should have
been released in 2006 but were delayed. This delay led to a cancellation of four of the
five planned for 2007 but, so successful was the model that the first batches quickly sold
out. It was therefore decided to release the four extra versions later in the year. Here
we have the last two of these. Both have 8-wheel tenders.
The first is 30737 'King Uther' (R2623) in BR early green livery. This was not amongst those originally planned but came as a replacement for 'The Red Knight' which was dropped from the programme.
The second model is 746 'Pendragon' (R2620) which is on Southern Railway Malachite green as carried in later years before Nationalisation of the railways.
The Hornby King Arthur model was nominated for an award in The Model of the Year poll run by Model Rail magazine in association with RMrail and MREmag. It did exceedingly well but you will have to buy a copy of the February issue of Model Rail to find out how well.
