Hornby LMS Stanier 2-6-4T R2635Stanier LMS tank .jpg (40385 bytes)

Stanier built both 3-cylinder and 2-cylinder 2-6-4 tanks for the LMS and this was one of the latter. Built between 1935 and 1943, the class eventually totalled 206 members. '2546', the subject of this model, was built by the North British Locomotive Co. in 1936. The class was based on Fowler's 2-6-4 tanks (already modelled by Hornby), but much revised by Stanier. They became the basis of BR's standard design. The engines were used mainly for passenger duties out of Euston and in the Birmingham, Manchester, Stoke, Leeds and West Scotland areas. They were all withdrawn in the 1960s and none survived into preservation. '2546' survived almost to the end of steam, being scrapped the year before.

This was one of Hornby's brand new models for 2007 but, with a busy programme last year, the first of the models did not appear until after Christmas. As one might expect, it is designed to a very high standard with all the attractions of recently developed models from Hornby - the high surface detail, fully fitted cab, precision engineered mechanism, sprung buffers, opening cab roof hatch etc. Three versions were offered in the 2007 catalogue and a further three in the 2008 edition.
