The Midland Region used their own design of train headcodes from LMS times, right through to the end of stream in BR days. The paper character stickers were thus the longest lived type of headcode train identifications. Generally applied to a board hung from the smokebox handrail on the front of a steam engine.
These easily used markings were used for carriage numbering as well, applied to the windows of coaches. The number stickers were also used on the Southern Region, added to some of the round white route indicator discs.
For 00 and 0 gauge, Precision
Labels offer thin paper self-adhesive character labels and an etched steel hanging board
to stick them to. There are two sizes of the distinctive font provided in the pack with a
full collection of the characters to create any code you wish. The board etching can be
used with a separately available magnet if desired.
For N gauge modellers, twenty one examples fixed headcodes are printed on a composite fridge-magnet material (a paper faced rubberised magnetic layer). A small amount of the material can be fixed to the model so that the codes can attach to that and be easily changed. Each of the codes presented has been taken from an actual photograph.
