While the BR green Maunsell coaches are 'high window' types, the set of Southern Railway ones are of the 'low window' variety. They are in olive green with brown surrounds to the door windows. Compared with the BR versions, the SR ones carry a lot more printed detail. This starts with the very fine yellow lining to produce a panel effect. The sides also carry 'first' or 'third' on the doors and 'Southern Railway' above the windows.
The numbers allocates to the seats in each compartment are also recorded above the windows to make it easier for passengers to find the seat they have reserved. The interior units are painted brown to represent varnished wood of the compartment walls and the roofs are off-white.
One of each of three of the coach types and two of the composite have been seen. The 1st/3rd composite coaches are numbered '5138' (R4299A) and '5141' (R4299B). The all-3rd is '2349' (R4297A), the 6-compartment brake/3rd is '4049' (R4300B) and the all 1st is '7665' (R4298A).
