This model of a Class 04 diesel shunter was first released by Bachmann in 1997. Since then there have been 14 versions of it. The latest is numbered '11222' and is in early BR black livery with early decals above the numbers on the cabsides. It is the second to carry the pristine black livery.
These small shunters were developed by the Drewry Car Company as early as 1947 and the LNER put one under trial at Gorton. With the newly formed British Railways favouring diesel engines for shunting because there was little preparation required before putting them into action, BR ordered a batch of the Drewry shunters in 1952. With their short wheelbase, they were ideal for use on docksides and in constricted private sidings, with their tight curves.
