Graham Farish Class 04 371-050Class 04.jpg (50588 bytes)

Britain has at last got N gauge models that will attract serious modellers and nothing says this louder than the completely new Class 04 produced by Bachmann for their Graham Farish range. It just bristles with added detail.

Two models are planned for this year, one in BR green livery and the other in BR blue. Here we have the green version which carries the number 'D2246'. The picture shows the model before the supplied extras have been added.

The real locomotives were introduced onto British Railways between 1952 and 1961. With Nationalisation of the railways, Riddles set about replacing steam shunting engines with diesels which were ready for use at the press of a starter button. For very restricted areas where the curved rails were of a small radius, such as tramways and docks, he needed locomotives with a short wheelbase. Consequently a fleet of Drewry diesel-mechanical shunters was ordered. Early ones were assembled by Drewry and Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows. Eventually 142 were built over several years and with many modifications made during that time.
