The ex-Airfix 7-plank wagon was first used by Hornby in 1998 and 27 versions of it have been produced since then. In the days of steam, station yards, besides having coal wagons delivering coal to staithes for domestic use, also had wagons delivering coal for use by the railway company for its locomotives. It is appropriate that Hornby have released their 7-plank wagon as an LMS loco coal wagon at the same time as they have produced a railway coal drop in the Skaledale range of lineside buildings and accessories. The loco coal wagons were pushed up the ramp into the drop house. The coal was then barrowed by hand from the wagon to the end of one of the three gantries and tipped into the tender or bunker of the waiting locomotive below. Hopefully more loco coal wagons will follow in support of the excellent coal drop. The wagon is numbered '70170'.
