Hornby 3-Plank Wagons3 Plank 18.jpg (48872 bytes)

The 3-plank drop-side wagon is one of three short wagons introduced by Hornby in 1995 to represent the early open wagons. As such, they are appropriate subjects for private owner liveries, like these two. The actual wagons had large blocks of oak wood fixed to the solebars to act as door stops when the sides were let down, but these are missing from the model.

No.172 from the James Carter & Sons Ltd fleet (R6338) is light grey (possibly a little lighter than the actual wagon) with ironwork in black and lettering in white, shaded black. The company were principally involved in producing asphalte paving for road construction. This was one of six 3-plank wagons which the company bought in 1923.

No.51 in the Trimsaran fleet (R6337) was one of 25 3-plank wagons received by the company in 1898. Built at the Gloucester wagon works, they were probably for the transportation of iron and steel and possibly stone. Like the real wagons, the model is painted red with the ironwork picked out in black and the lettering white, shaded black.
