The Rovex Story |   Articles

Hammond Publishing was formed in November 1997, by father and son team, Pat and Tim Hammond, primarily to edit Model Railway Enthusiast magazine on behalf of Garnett Dickinson Publishing, with effect from the February 1998 issue.

This arrangement concluded shortly after the June 1999 transfer of the magazine to Kelsey Publishing.  With effect from the November 1999 issue, the magazine (renamed Model Railway Collector) was edited by Peter Simpson.  Pat and Tim continued to be associated with the magazine as consultant editors and contributors until its demise in July 2000.

This Model Railway Express (MREmag) website was a totally seperate venture to Model Railway Enthusiast and continues to be solely operated by Pat Hammond to provide a daily update of news from the model railway industry and an edited forum for railway modellers.

The magazine is at:  www.mremag.com  and features News, Reader's Views, New Releases, Book Reviews, Classified Ads, Articles and Links.

After 30 years as an executive in the leisure industry, Pat Hammond took early retirement in 1997 to develop his writing career. He is well known in model railway circles as the author of The Rovex Story  which includes three volumes as follows: Vol. 1 - 'Tri-ang Railways', Vol. 2 - 'Tri-ang Hornby', Vol.3 - 'Hornby Railways'.  He has also compiled Ramsay's British Model Trains Catalogue (see below) since the 2nd Edition. Books planned and in preparation include: a book on Bachmann Branchline currently being written and due to be published in the Spring of 2010, The Rovex Story, Vol. 4 - 'Hornby' (not yet started), An A-Z of the British Model Railway Industry (which will cover the last 100 years and is a slow developer!) and A History of Airfix and Mainline Railways (material being gathered.  As compiler of Ramsay's British Model Trains Catalogue, he is always working on the next edition.    He writes the 'Railways Round Up' and 'Vintage Model Trains' columns in Collectors Gazette and provides occasional articles for British Railway Modelling, The Hornby Collector and other magazines, including an on-going series called Wagon Works in the Bachmann Club magazine.    In December 2006 he took over the editorship of Train Collectors Society's quarterly magazine and relaunched it as a full colour 52 page glossy publication called Train Collector.

Tim Hammond, is an experienced modeller, having built two exhibition layouts and assisted in the construction of many others at his local model railway club.    He has an honours degree in Business Administration and has been employed in a variety of market research and facility management roles as well as running his own business in the IT industry. He now works in the printing industry.

Ramsay's British Model Trains Catalogue

This is a guide to railway models produced for the British market over the last 100 plus years, together with their suggested values.  All known variations of  47 different ranges of models, in 5 different gauges (0, 00, H0, TT, N), are listed, from the earliest Bassett-Lowke 0 gauge models to the most recent Hornby, Bachmann, Dapol, Graham Farish, Ace Trains, Heljan, etc.  More than 70 leading collectors have participated in the listing and the author always welcomes new information. New ranges added for the first time are ViTrains, OO Works and Peco Wonderful Wagons.

It is the only comprehensive book on the subject and includes suggested values for each item as well as over 900 coloured photographs.  Each included brand has a potted history at the start of its chapter and there are chapters on the history of the industry and the collecting movement.   Other chapters include books published on the subject and how to determine the value of models.  The book is now updated every  year to include all new models released since the last edition and to add any information that has been received on obsolete ranges.  For the first time, the 6th Edition is in full colour throughout. The 7th Edition is due to be published in the Summer of 2010.

The current edition is the 6th and runs to 450 pages. Since the 5th edition, 2,800 more entries have been added.  It is priced £22.95 and is no longer available from the author.  However, it is understood that the publisher still has stock left and can be contacted at: Warner Group Publications plc, The Maltings, West Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire PE10 9PH.
