We move over to the East for this volume, and the North side of the Thames. This was an area dominated by the Great Eastern Railway, except for the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway which fell into LMS hands. The Great Eastern became part of the London North Eastern Railway in 1923 and the former GER lines, covered by this book, arise from a branch off the London -Colchester main line at Shenfield and served the Crouch and Blackwater area of Essex. The line ran eastwards through Billericay to Wickford, where it divided. The lower branch went through Rayleigh, Hockley and Rochford, where it turned southwards to Southend. The upper branch re-crossed the River Crouch heading for Woodham Ferrers, where it divided again. The lower branch ran directly east to Southminster and the upper one turned north to Maldon, on the River Blackwater. The book has the usual maps, elevation charts, timetables and ticketing information.
