The output of American railroad writer Brian Solomon is extraordinary. In the past year I have reviewed many books by him, supplied by the MBI Publishing Company of Minneapolis. This time Brian, who shares his time between the USA and Ireland, looks at the locomotives of the Philadelphia-based Baldwin Company, whose contribution to railway technology and equipment was enormous. The well illustrated volume includes many superb builders photos and publicity images taken with large format cameras and housed in the Broadbelt Collection at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The substantial text follows the development of the locomotives from the earliest steam models, through to the company's final passenger and freight diesel-electrics.
