The book is unusual in this day and age in having monochrome photographs throughout. Perhaps this is explained by the earliness of the subject. It is however a text rich book for those who would rather read about the subject than look at pictures. In turn, the chapters work their way through the early diesel classes, starting at Class 14 and finishing with Class 55. It covers the standard diesel locomotive designs that were made during the early 1960s, including some less successful ones. Many of the most successful designs did not arise from the 1955 Modernisation Plan but were developed during the period covered by the book. There are plenty of previously unpublished material and photographs.
