In the 'Branch Lines Around' series we move to Hertford and Hatfieild with also coverage of Broxbourne, St.Albans and Buntingford. Taking Hertford as the core, the line runs east down the Lea Valley to Ware after which it follows the valley south to Broxbourne - which is as far south as we go in this volume. Soon after Ware there was a branch line off to the left which leaves the Lea Valley in a north-easterly direction and, at Hadham, turned north to Buntingford. Returning to Hertford, we follow the line westwards up the Lea Valley to Welwyn Garden City, after which it turns sharply south to Hatfield. From Hatfield, the line turns west again to StAlbans. Before Nationalisation of the railways, this was LNER territory and served what today are the new London suburbs. The only surviving stretch of any length is that between Hertford East and Broxbourne. The usual Middleton Press format applies throughout the book.
