The DVD takes us year by year through the period, from the launch of the final steam locomotive to be built for British Railways, Evening Star, to the running of the last official steam service. The documentary has a commentary by Alan Pegler throughout and several newsreel exerts from the period. There are many well known events along the way including the Beeching Report and Alan Pegler's purchase of Flying Scotsman. Much of the footage is about the early steps in preservation and rail tours but there is plenty of time given to the railways in normal operation.
