A wheel arrangement that is sadly missing in the British proprietary model market is the 4-4-2, otherwise known as an 'Atlantic'. It was the forerunner of the 'Pacific' (4-6-2), which became the unofficial standard wheel arrangement for express locomotives in Britain, until the end of steam. However, in its day, the 'Atlantic' was seen as an advancement at a time when 4-4-0s ruled the expresses and the extra wheels allowed for longer and thus more powerful locomotives. 60% of 'Atlantics' ran in the USA, but Britain had 310 such engines, some of which adorned posters and attended exhibitions as symbols of fast travel. By the 1930s they had achieved 100mph and were amongst the fastest machines on earth. The book tells the international development of these popular locomotives and includes over 100 illustrations relating to them.
