The subject of railways in wartime is of much interest today with many of the preserved lines staging 'wartime weekends'. The railways were put under extraordinary pressure during the Second World War and were vital to the war effort. They were also a principle target of the Luftwaffe and many acts of heroism by railway staff were recorded. They continued to move troops, equipment and munitions, evacuate the cities and ensure that essential supplies were delivered to Britain's home population. The build up to the D-Day landings could not have been possible without the part played by the railways. For the period of the war the railways were effectively nationalised and official photographs were taken for purposes of propaganda. This OPC imprint contains many excellent images and depends on the captions to tell the story. Well recommended.
