The ABC books were the bedrock of the Ian Allan company and were the reason that the company came into existence. In 1942, the young Ian Allan was working for the Southern Railway during the war and answering queries from members of the public about locomotives in the Southern Railway fleet. That lead to him compiling a list of them that could be posted as an easy answer to queries. From that he formed his own publishing company and produced lists of locomotives on the other three railway companies books. The first combined volume was produced in 1943 and these continued until 1989. Over many years the early volumes have been reprinted and this is the latest of these.
