We have previously reviewed the first book in this series which looked at the London Midland Region and here we have the second volume. The series dedicates itself to the changes that occurred in each region of British Railways between their formation at Nationalisation in 1948 and their demise in 1986, when the regions were replaced by the new business sectors such as Network SouthEast, InterCity, Regional Railways and Railfreight. We see the changes in locomotive requirements which led to a steady phasing out of steam power and the introduction of various diesel locomotives and DMUs. There are 16 pages of introductory text followed by some 180 well captioned coloured photographs, many of which have not previously been seen. Sadly, the period covered includes the demise of Swindon Works.
