What were later to be classified as the Class 33 diesels, arrived in 1958 and eventually formed a class 98 strong. They became the Southern Region's standard main line diesel, the region having less need for them than other regions due to the high level of electrification in the south of England. There were three subclasses including the narrow 33/2 for use on the Hastings line. Many of them received names. The entire class had been withdrawn from normal service by 1999 but many of them have been preserved and some remain in use on a spot-hire basis, especially by charter companies. Publication of the book coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the class's introduction. This is a large collection of photographs of Class 33 diesels in many locations, with little quick access data for reference purposes.
