This is the first book in a new colour series about the evolution of the railway scene region by region. It covers the twenty years between Nationalisation in 1948 and the disappearance of steam in 1968. In particular, there is emphasis on the years after the 1955 Modernisation Plan. It is written very much with modellers in mind. Chapters include: West Coast Transition, Modernising the Midland, Push-Pull to DMU, Local Passenger, On Shed and Works, Express Passenger, Electrification Progress, Shunting Duties, Freight Operations and Special Traffic. The pictures are good and some are excellent.
