Lydney lies close to the North bank of the River Severn, on the edge of the Forest of Dean, and was at the centre of a network of lines that formed the Severn & Wye Railway system. This dated from 1810 and is particularly interesting as it included docks and served the Forest of Dean coal industry. It became a GWR/MR joint railway in 1894, an arrangement which continued into the post-Grouping era. At Nationalisation it became part of the Western Region. The cutback of services had started in 1929 and passenger traffic ended in 1964. The last of the freight routes closed in 1976. This was over the lines between Lydney and Parkend and this subsequently became the Dean Forest Railway - a preservation project.
