The book is published to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Mallard's world speed record breaking run on 3rd July 1938. The book looks at the origins of the class and the operating achievements of its members. The story carries through from the LNER in to BR days and on into preservation. All six preserved A4s are detailed individually in the final chapter. The pictures come from many well known collections, but are of varying quality - a problem common to books with a very restricted subject range.
