The British Railways Pictorial series currently runs to 13 titles. While most of them are area studies, some are treatises on motive power types such as early DMUs and EMUs. It was the London & North Western Railway that made Crewe famous by building their workshops there and providing an industrial base around which the town grew. A wide range of industries and large population centres were served by Crewe, including Manchester, Liverpool and North Wales. The author has captured the atmosphere of the main line between Crewe and Warrington in the days of steam but has allowed space for some later machines, too.
