The 1955 British Railways Modernisation Plan called for the introduction of 25kv AC services over the West Coast Main Line and the first section was completed in 1959. The 25kv system slowly spread over the next four decades so that the electrification of the East Coast Main Line was completed shortly before Privatisation of the entire network kicked in. For over 50 years the system has developed and from the Class AL1 to the Pendolino, the stock that ran on the network has evolved. This book covers them all and goes back to look as earlier AC traction in Britain. As you would expect from Colin Marsden, it is an authoritative book, comprehensive and easy to read. The highly detailed text is supported by an excellent and extensive range of photographs, many of them in colour.
