Containerisation was one of the most important revolutions to hit the freight transport system worldwide. This book looks at its history in the United States starting with 'piggybacking' in the 1930s and follows it through to the present day. The author's account of the huge changes take us through the implications of the Staggers Act of 1980 and various railroad mergers, to the emergence of partnerships between various railroads and trucking and shipping firms. The book also considers the importance of specialised modern rolling stock, motive power, loading equipment and intermodal hubs including Boston, Baltimore, Seattle, Long Beach and Kansas City. We are accustomed to double heading as well as 'top and tailing' in Britain, but there are pictures in the book of some massive trains pulled by up to five diesel locomotives combining their power.
