Probably, like the reviewer, there are several railway enthusiasts who find these books on narrow gauge systems particularly fascinating as they contain information on railway systems we knew nothing about. They were invariably built by industrial concerns and on private land, in consequence of which they received little publicity and were out of reach to all but those who worked on the site.
The book contains details of 27 individual narrow gauge railways in Devon. 13 of them were built as industrial networks, including the Lee Moor Tramway; 4 had a military purpose, 9 are tourist attractions and one, The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, was built as a public transport system. The book is very well illustrated with black and white photographs, maps and track plans of the individual sites.
