In the Country Railway Routes series, Brecon to Newtown is about the Mid Wales Line and is presented in the usual Middleton Press format. This combines a interesting range of photographs with sections of Ordnance Survey maps and facsimiles of tickets and timetables. Normally the photographs in these books show scenes old and new but this time the only new photograph comes on the last page. This is because the Mid Wales line, which ran North to South through Wales, is no more and the only surviving station is at Newtown where is still functions on the East-West line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth.
With the exception of a short stretch from Brecon to Talyllyn Junction, the Mid Wales line formed part of the Cambrian Railway system until taken over by the Great Western Railway. The short stretch from Brecon was part of the Brecon & Merthyr Railway.
