The book follows the former Great Eastern line from Stratford, northwards through Leyton and Leytonstone to Loughton and Epping and then curves east to Ongar. About a third of the way along this journey there is Woodford Junction where a branch turns eastwards to Chigwell and Grange Hill and then South through Hainault, Barkingside and Newbury Park to join the Stratford to Chelmsford line between Ilford and Seven Kings. This volume also includes the stretch of London Underground line from just South of Newbury Park, stretching westwards through Gants Hill, Redbridge and Wanstead, to arrive back at Leytonstone.

The book contains greater than normal background information by way of introduction. It includes an excellent selection of black and white photographs which show the use of the lines down the ages. The pictures are well captioned and are supported by the usual Ordnance Survey map sections, timetables and reproductions of tickets.
