This book was fascinating to the reviewer who is familiar with the railways and former railway sites around Whitby. It has therefor been fascinating to see these places when steam was dominant and before the lines along the Yorkshire coast were dismantled and their scars covered over. The book looks at the network in four sections: The iron roads of Cleveland, the south bank of the Tees to Saltburn, the Middlesbrough-Guisborough-Whitby line and the stretch from Whitby up the Esk valley to Picton. This contains some excellent, well captioned, photographs which have been drawn from many different collections.
