These days, when most books published on railways are picture albums, it makes a refreshing change to see a book which has text as its main purpose. Stuart Hylton takes us through the development of the railways from 1820 until 1845. With little photographic evidence of this time, not surprisingly the author has made good use of magazine illustrations which were etchings made by witnesses at the time. These are, in themselves, a fascination piece of history. For a student of the Industrial Revolution, which turned Britain into the 'Workshop of the World', this will make interesting reading as the railways were a key element in the vast changes that were taking place in the first half of the 19th Century.
