We feel sure that this book will be well received by the growing number of people interested in the transition period of the 1950s which led to the development of diesel dominance, the expansion of electric traction and the end of steam on Britain's railways in the late 1960s. The Leader project was an important part of this transition as it was a last ditch attempt at revolutionising the steam engine. Started by Oliver Bulleid when CME of the Southern Railway, the project was taken over by British Railways who spent the equivalent of £10m on research and development of the locomotive. However, the British Transport Commission had set their sights on a future free of steam, so was the project sabotaged? Was it a fiasco or a triumph? You will have to read the book to find out.
