The OPC 'An Illustrated History' series has provided us with some well researched and profusely illustrated studies. The current addition to the series looks at a line that interests many railway enthusiasts because of the preserved status of part of it. A product of the Light Railways Act 1896, it was built as the Rother Valley Railway by that famous proponent of light railways - Colonel Stephens. It was (and to some extent, still is) the epitome of the classic English light railway - a character which so many railway modellers around the world have tried to capture. It was unusual in not being swallowed up at the 1923 Grouping but stayed reasonably independent of the Southern Railway until Nationalisation in 1948 (although the reason for this is not properly covered in the book). The author is one of the foremost commentators on the history of British light and narrow gauge railways, particularly those owned and operated by Colonel Stephens.
