The book comes within the London Suburban Railways series produced by Middleton Press. The first section of the Baker Street to Uxbridge line opened in 1868 to Swiss Cottage. Bit by bit this was extended northwards until it reached Aylesbury 24 years later. The line from Harrow to Uxbridge did not open until 1904. The Stanmore branch, from north of Wembley Park, was opened in 1932 and the following year the Metropolitan Railway came under the London Passenger Transport Board. Today, the Metropolitan, Piccadily and Jubilee lines operate over these tracks. Between Baker Street and Finchley Road, with minor exceptions, the route is underground. North of this point the lines run above ground. The book follows the well established formula of well captioned photographs, maps, tickets and timetables.
