- 438 locomotives were built between 1942 and
1944 for use after the D-Day landings. A large number remained in store after the war and
the Southern Railway purchased one for trials at Southampton Docks. The trials proved very successful and a further 13 were purchased
(making 14 in total). Others saw service in other countries following the war. The first
of the British Railways locomotives (former Southern Railway) was withdrawn in May 1962
and the last in July 1967. 4 locomotives have been preserved in the UK

(estimated) locomotives were built between 1942 and 1947. 800 of these were delivered to Britain and
during the war the Class saw widespread use in the UK
before crossing into Europe. The
GWR used 174, LNER 168, LMS 50 and Southern 6 during the war, although none saw service
with the four mainline companies after the war in the UK. Two
locomotives remained in War Department use at the Longmoor Military Railway for driver
training for a period. Many were sold after the war to overseas railways and continued in
regular use until the 1990s. Eight locomotives have been preserved in the UK following
purchase from overseas administrations in China, Greece, Hungary and Poland
