They could be distinguished from Kirtley’s earlier goods engines by the graceful curves over the running plates over each driving wheel. In 1906 a number were sold to Italian State Railways were they continued in service for many years. The first was withdrawn in the 1920s and the last in 1951

This is a complex class with many variations. 865 locomotives were built between 1864 and 1902. A further 40 were built for the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway and 16 for the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway both of which the Midland were joint owners in association with another company. From 1917 onwards many were fitted with Belpaire fireboxes and became 3F Class locomotives (see separate entry). The first 2F was withdrawn in the 1920s and the last in 1963
